Overview of pediatric obesity: diagnosis, epidemiology, and significance

Background: The prevalence of pediatric obesity has increased over the past several decades worldwide and in Korea. Childhood become a serious social problem.Current Concepts: Diagnosis is based on body mass index (BMI) children adolescents aged ≥2 years. Overweight obese are defined as BMI ≥85th percentile to <95th ≥95th percentile, respectively, corresponding sex age. Obesity further classified Class I (BMI <120% 95th percentile), II ≥120% <140% III ≥140% percentile). Waist circumference waist-height ratio used evaluate abdominal obesity. Pediatric can cause childhood comorbidities, including type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, hypertension. Adult obesity, cardiovascular diseases, other adult together with medical costs additional consequences obesity.Discussion Conclusion: Prevention, diagnosis, proper management important.
